Smart Electro-Textile Interfaces for Augmentative and Alternative Communication for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Technical Sciences/uniri projects by experienced researchers

Project start: 1.10.2025.

The aim of the ETEX-AAC project is to develop and evaluate smart electro-textile interfaces that enable multimodal interaction for children with developmental disabilities. The project is based on the use of smart textiles, i.e., the integration of textile-based sensors sensitive to touch, pressure, sound, and motion with actuators for light, sound, and vibration. Such interfaces support augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), foster cause-and-effect reasoning, joint play, learning, and participation in everyday activities.

Through a multidisciplinary approach involving electrical engineering, design, rehabilitation, and education, the project will investigate the design, functionality, and applicability of electro-textile systems in educational and therapeutic contexts. The project includes the development of experimental prototypes to be tested with end users in collaboration with educational and rehabilitation institutions. Special emphasis will be placed on adapting the technology to individual needs and on developing accessible and modular solutions.

Expected outcomes include scientific publications in international journals, contributions to the development of open science, the establishment of new collaborations with research and industry partners, and the creation of a foundation for the further development of innovative assistive technology in the fields of education, therapy, and social inclusion.
