Variable rooftop wind turbine

Technical Sciences/uniri projects by young researchers and researchers returnees

Project start: 1.10.2025.

The project focuses on the development and experimental testing of an innovative cross-flow wind turbine adapted for urban environments, with special emphasis on integration into multi-residential buildings.

Project goals include the creation of a modular prototype with interchangeable blades and adjustable pitch angle, aerodynamic performance measurements in a wind tunnel, development of a precise CFD model, and integration of sensor systems and measurement electronics. The project combines numerical simulations with experimental data to validate the efficiency of different configurations and define the optimal design.

Research will be conducted in the laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka, using sensor equipment and computing infrastructure to measure power output, torque, and rotational speed of the turbine, as well as the impact of the roof structure on local aerodynamics.

The project is expected to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed wind turbine configuration and enable the development of a real-scale turbine model for urban use. It will also stimulate further research in the fields of mechatronics and renewable energy sources and contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions in densely populated areas.
