Sustainable Energy Solutions for Emission Reduction in Maritime Transport and Ports

Technical Sciences/uniri projects by experienced researchers

Project start: 1.10.2025.

The maritime sector faces the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with global environmental goals and increasingly stringent regulations. The SESMAR project (Sustainable Energy Solutions for Maritime Transport and Ports) is focused on research and integration of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies in ship transport and port systems.

The goal of the project is to analyze the possibilities of using solar energy, wind energy and hydrogen energy in the maritime sector, as well as the application of electrification and hybrid propulsion systems to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Special emphasis will be placed on the development of strategies for the decarbonization of ports and marinas through the optimization of energy systems, the implementation of shore power systems and the integration of smart networks.

The research will include analysis of existing technologies, case studies and modeling of energy efficiency of different solutions. Cooperation with academic institutions, maritime operators and port authorities is planned to ensure the practical applicability of the results.

Expected outcomes include the identification of the most promising technologies for reducing emissions, the development of guidelines for energy optimization in the maritime sector, and increasing awareness of the importance of sustainable energy solutions. The SESMAR project contributes to global efforts to decarbonize the maritime sector and encourages the transition to more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient ship and port systems.
